The Diabetic foot department at this institute primarily focuses on prevention of minor and major amputations in the lower limb of patients with diabetes.
Patients are screened annually for peripheral neuropathy and peripheral vascular disease in the foot department. Accordingly, they are categorized into risk categories 0-3. Patients with risk category 0 come back for annual screening. Patients in other risk groups have their feet completely examined in the podiatry room. This is followed by an elaborate education session. The foot educator explains to them the pathology of diabetic foot and preventive measures like regular foot care, footwear and exercises. Each and every step is explained clearly to the patient and a demonstration is done with the patient. A typical education session lasts for atleast 30 minutes. These patients are reviewed every 3 to 6 months depending on their risk status. All the patients are given custom made indoor and outdoor footwear. In addition to this temple socks are given to patients for protection while going to temples. In addition to this compression socks and stockings(to reduce edema and risk of deep venous thrombosis during long hours of travel) are also available in the foot department.
Pedicure is part of the facility at the foot department. The pedicurist explains to the patients how to examine and clean the foot every night and the do’s and don’ts of foot care. Hence foot education is done at every level to the patient. Products required for pedicure are available for sale in the foot department.
